A Cowboy's Life: I Love Naps

I Love Naps

9:38:00 AM

To say that I love a good nap is an understatement. I look forward to the weekend, knowing that I will get to take a nap each day. Want to do something during nap time? You are out of luck…nothing gets in the way of our rest time.

Of course we have shared the importance of naps with our son.  Basically, we told him he must nap every single day until he’s 18 (I’ll let you know how that works out for us.) Other than the fact that as parents we need a little bit of quiet time each day, I truly feel like children need to nap.

Their little brains are sponges and are constantly learning and growing. The naps provide the much needed break from this. Like any kid, he will fight it but always end up giving in. The fight is always worth it because I don’t want to have a cranky, whining toddler on our hands.

Our son has only been really sick one time, and I think part of that is that he takes a nap every single day – no matter what. And not a 20 minute car nap, always in his bed or grandma’s. He’s not in daycare, so that helps with some of the germs, but he’s still around kids at church, story time, parks, etc. But the naps gives his body a rest and able to fight off any illnesses. Because of this we will continue to have nap time in our home for as long as we can.

Do you still make your children take naps? At what age did they give them up? Do you feel naps are important for kids?

  1. When my boys were little, they were big nappers too, and I always tried to sleep during their nap time because that was the only time they let me rest. LOL. Happy Thursday!

  2. I let them give them up when it becomes a fight to get them to sleep, and when they start wanting to stay up late because of them. It has been different for each child. My 4th boy has napped the longest, though not every day. He is going to be 5 in July and still falls asleep during his afternoon cartoon time probably 2-3 times a week. The other three boys were done napping before they were 4, and we'll see how little girl does. I plan to be napping with her for a long time!

    1. I guess I won't mind giving it up as long as he isn't cranky. Otherwise, that would just make a miserable day for everyone.

  5. LOVE our naps and both my little ones still sleep a good stretch in the afternoon. But we call them "quiet times" because we intend to enforce that as long as possible--even after they stop napping! (I say that remembering how much I hated naps as a kid but loved being in my room by myself!)

  8. My son gave them up at 3 and my daughter is looking to give them up now at 2. She needs it more than he did because she gets really cranky without it, he only got lethargic. Of course, for me, I wish all of them would nap everyday at the same time. Now, my son will sit quietly and read for "nap" time, while I fight my daughter to sleep. Sometimes it works, other times, not so much. Thanks for sharing with Creative Style!
